Hair Thinning? Here’s My Advice

On TikTok and Instagram, I’ve been taking you along with me on my hair regrowth journey. My hairline was receding (at not even 30!!) and I was struggling with thinning, balding hair instead of the thick, healthy hair I was 100% supposed to have. There’s absolutely no shame in having struggles on your hair growth journey- or needing a hair regrowth journey at all! You are absolutely not alone and so many of us have been there.

If your hair’s been thinning recently, here’s some next steps for you, love.

Why is My Hair Thinning?

While it’s hard to specifically diagnose what’s causing your hair thinning pains without all the details, there’s a lot of really common habits that damage our hair.

Some common habits that might be (are probably) hurting your hair:

  • Shampooing too often (yes, that includes every day. Or even every other day)

  • Using lots of heated styling tools

  • Your styling habits

  • Constantly wearing super tight ponytails and updos

  • Not really nourishing your hair with oils, conditioner, or other strengthening treatments

There’s absolutely no shame in having these habits! To most people, they’re totally normal- and we’ve all got work and life and stress all mixed in to just trying to be as healthy and confident as possible.

But some of these habits, we can totally work at flipping around so that your hair can heal and finally get healthy and strong.

Some Ways to Regrow Your Hair

  • If you’ve been around for any length of time, you know my love affair with rosemary. Rosemary oil, rosemary water, rosemary everything. It’s been the #1 thing that’s helped my balding temples by far.

  • Explore no-heat hair styling methods. I’ve been experimenting with no-heat curls for a while over on Instagram and TikTok, so follow along and see what I’m finding!

  • Avoid tight hairstyles. Instead of super tight ponytails and buns (which used to be my favorite too, I get you) - try using silk scrunchies or looser claw clips to hold your hair up.

  • Get in a routine of hair masks, hair oils, or hair treatments that best fit your hair. You don’t have to have a 20 step routine to start nourishing your hair. Oiling my hair is one of my favorite practices, but you can also explore conditioners, rinses, and masks- which I share about my favorites too!

  • Train your hair to not need a wash as often. I do a deep dive into this in another blog post but washing your hair too often does massive damage to your hair (sulfate-free or not). One of the best things you can do for your hair is take the time to train it to not need shampooing as often through hair rinses, using dry shampoo, and wearing your hair up to bed.

Obviously I’m not a medical professional (yet… stay tuned ;) ), so if you have deeper, lingering reasons for your hair loss like genetics or underlying health conditions- I can’t treat that and you should seek support for massive hair loss. But, these hair care tips can apply to anyone worried about that slowly-receding hairline or your 1000th hair breakage of the day. Your hair deserves nourishing, and so do you, so explore some everyday, totally doable options to make your hair its healthiest yet.
