How to Train Your Hair to Go Longer Between Shampoos

One of the biggest and best things I recommend to people trying to get healthier, thicker, and stronger hair is to stop shampooing so much! Shampooing your hair every day, or even every other day, is not healthy for your hair- no matter what kind of shampoo you use.

Once I got my hair where it only needed to be washed once or twice a week, my whole hair journey changed. I noticed my hair grew faster, broke less often, and got shinier and stronger than I ever thought it could.

The Benefits of Going Longer Between Washes

  • A healthier, thicker head of hair

  • More natural oils in your hair making it stronger and shinier

  • More moisturized hair

  • Faster and stronger hair re-growth

It may sound crazy- but there are some great (and doable!) ways to train even the oiliest of hair to not need shampooing so often.

Here’s How to Train Your Hair To Go Longer Between Shampoos

  • Do a clarifying shampoo once a week. A lot of your hair’s oil is buildup over time, so using a good clarifying shampoo (See some of my favorites here), will help deeply cleanse your scalp and hair when you do shampoo.

  • Avoid styling products. That product build up I just mentioned? This is how it gets there! All those styling products you layer on often stay on your roots and scalp, building up over time if they’re not cleaned out. Styling products can also weigh down your hair, as well as keep her from being as moisturized and using her natural oils as best as possible.

  • Dry shampoo! When your hair’s still clean but maybe needs a little refresh, just use dry shampoo. The key is to use it *before* your hair gets oily and make sure to thoroughly brush and massage it into your scalp. Use it before that workout or going to bed for the best results.

  • Rinse with apple cider vinegar once a week. If you’ve tried training your hair and failed- this is probably the missing step! ACV works wonder to rinse out build up without stripping your hair of moisture or its natural oils, so using this rinse once a week is so important to this journey.

  • Wear your hair up, especially to bed, with a silk or satin scrunchie or wrap. Wearing your hair up keeps it from all the friction and oil build-up while you sleep, or while doing anything that can cause extra dirt, oil, and build-up in your hair. Make sure your updos are on the looser side and have a fabric that’s nice to hair- and not gonna just cause more frizz and oil.

Not only is only having to shampoo once a week really convenient, it’s also so much better for my hair.
